PILOT TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

In a nutshell, the first licence you have to acquire is the PPL private pilot licence. The minimum hours for this is 45minimum flying hours . It is illegal to work with a PPL as you are still what is known as a ''TYRO '' Pilot ( meaning an inexperienced pilot. The next stage in your training is what is known as a CPL( Commercial Pilot Licence).In this stage you will be hour building up to 200hrs. The last stage is the MULTI/ I.R ( Instrument Rating). This is where you are trained on how to fly a multi engine aircraft and how to fly just on instruments when visibility is below minimums.

What are the requirements needed before training to be a pilot?

1. Must be at least 17years of age

2. Must have a C+ in KCSE mean grade with C+ in Math, English and Physics

3. Must take a medical exam from an approved aviation authority examiner. In the medical exam, they will check your heart rate, hearing and eyesight( if you where spectacles  this does not disqualify you to be a pilot as you will be issued with aviation spectacles. If you are colour blind then you will be automatically disqualified) . A class II medical certificate has to be issued to you on passing the medical checkup. It is with this certificate that you will apply for your SPL (Students pilot licence)with which you will be carrying in your training flights. Application for this will be made by you at the K.C.A.A ( Kenya civil aviation authority) Licencing department.

A. PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE
      (Duration 5-6months)

Before issuance of a PPL Licence the following requirements must be met:

1.Not less than 45total flight hours
2. 10 hrs solo including 5hrs of solo cross-country flight with at least one crosscountry 
flight totaling 150 nautical miles ( 270 km)..The rest of the flying time should be under supervision from qualified flight instructor
3. Must pass the KCAA ground examinations
4. Must pass the G.F.T (general flight test) within 6months of passing the ground examinations
5. Be in possession of a current class II medical certificate



B. COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENCE REQUIREMENTS ( Duration:10-12months)

To acquire a commercial pilot licence, the following requirements must be met:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Be in possession of a Class I medical certificate
- Must have up to 200hrs
- Must pass the  written KCAA examinations
-Must pass a G.F.T ( general flight test) 


3. MULTI/ IR Rating  ( Duration 2months)

This is where you are trained on how to fly a multi engine aircraft and includes simulator training as well. You will be more marketable if you finish up to this stage.
requirements for this stage;

-10hrs on the simulator
-15hr instrument flying 
total : 25hrs minimum

4. ATPL ( Airline Transport Pilot Licence)

This is the highest Pilot Licence  qualification one can acquire. To get an ATPL , you need to meet the following requirements :

- Have at least 1500 flying hours
-Pass a written ATPL Exam
